Halloween. It's one of those holidays that tries to make it in France every year with, at best, lukewarm results. It can't be the costumes or the candy. I'm sure all kids like that. I think it's the begging part.
Trick or Treat just doesn't have that same ring to it in French."Un défi ou un bonbon." Chew on that! And that's if they even make it to your door since it would be impolite to just open the gate of someone's house. I remember the year of the epic trick-or-treating FAIL, when the kids (plastic produce bags in hand) were so stressed about the whole thing they walked off in the time it took me to open the door. When they did make it to the door it was a scene from Les Miserables as they meekly gestured towards their produce bags complete with Shrek-cat eyes.
Last year we had three kids come by. Our two neighbor kids and a friend of theirs. They put on such a display complete with "trick or treat" in English that it made me wonder if they didn't have a fabulous American neighbor...... This year I bought candy we would actually enjoy eating and left the light on outside, just in case. Big Sister was so disappointed she wanted to literally go and verify if the neighbors were celebrating in secret....I held her back.
Bonjour! I hope you're having a great day. If this is your first time here, have a look around and consider subscribing via email!
