Amoureux (ah-moor-ruh = a crush)
*Name changed to protect the innocent and unaware . . .
This week, Big Sister was in day camp to spend some quality time with her best friend before they see each other in class since Big Sister will be back at her old school this year. Us moms were able to get them into the same class but it wouldn't do to have them separated for chatting . . . so off she went to meet all her little buddies.
Day 1 :
She was already mentioning a certain *Nicolas. Ah yes, the little blond, blue-eyed boy had declared his crush on her some 6 months ago and here he was---LIVE!Day 2 :
She expressed concern because rumor had it that she is only one in a long list of Nicolas' "amoureux" . . . of special note is *Emilie because she really likes him too. The next day the camp will have a costumed "dance", called a boum here, in the afternoon. What to wear?!Day 3:
Big Sister looked beautiful in her princess outfit and that afternoon she got in the car beaming. As luck would have it their group staged make-believe weddings (??!!!! what the what?) as a prelude to the boum. Emilie rushed up to Nicolas and asked his hand in marriage to which he replied "non."Emilie : "but you said you liked me!"
Nicolas responded : "I was joking"
Emilie burst into tears.
OUCH!
Big Sister retells this tale of lovesick horror with an air of determination on her face because now she knows that Nicolas didn't really like Emilie. Tomorrow, she says, she will make it so that she sits next to him on the bus to get to the bottom of his true feelings for her.
(At this point, it was all I could do to hold in my giggles and my gasps of shock at my SEVEN year old's logical little love life. Poor Nicolas! Doomed from the start as us girls really are much more insightful to this sort of thing even from this tender age.)
Day 4 :
Big ole banana smile coming to the car. She'd done it, she declared. I held my breath. Though she ended up sitting in front of him on the bus, she did send her BFF to ask him the all important question : did he really have a crush on her? Her friend, in true dramatic style, told her this : If I come back and I'm crying you will know the answer is not good, if I come back smiling you will know that it is good. She came back smiling. Big Sister regrets not having asked him to marry her but she'll have plenty of time to eliminate the rest of the competition starting on Monday.
Day 5 :
Fever. I guess she went the way of Sense & Sensibility, the excitement causing her to become unwell.
I thought day camp was about friendship bracelets, making stuff out of paper and cardboard, jumping rope and bouncing in the bouncy castle. I feel like I'm rushing towards parenting an adolescent at breakneck speed.
