Monday, Monday . . .

Chassé-croisé = (sha-say krwa-zay) the phenomenon that occurs on French roads usually on the last weekend of July in which the juilletists and the aoutiens cross paths. Those who took their vacations in July tie up traffic heading back from the seashore, and those whose vacation begins in August create horrific traffic jams as they head to the coasts. This creates "black" driving conditions. It's the top story on the news with live reports from the major tolls. Equipped with a GPS and a map we were able to avoid all the bad traffic by traveling off the beaten path through picturesque villages, even stopping to visit a castle.

bouchon (booshon, nasal n, also means a cork or stopper on a bottle) embouteillage (ahmbootay-yaj, from the word for bottle)  = traffic jam.

Dear Readers
