Poisson d'avril . . .

Poisson d'avril = (pwason davreel)
Happy April Fool's Day!

One of the chocolate shops in our town.

April Fool's Day here in France is fêted with pranks, media hoaxes and the replacing of sugar with salt in the sugar-bowl. Children perpetuate a centuries-old tradition of sticking paper cutouts of fish onto schoolmates backs. An even bigger, and more perilous, challenge is to stick one on to the back of the teacher!

Why a fish?
There are many a theory concerning the origin of the fish, none which has been widely accepted. One rumor connects day with the end of the reproduction period of fish, April being the start of the fishing season. Another theory places the sun in the astral path of the "fish" signs. Yet another replaces the banal fish with a mackerel, that in the intricacies of the French psyche represents a lover, with Spring being the time for reproducing or . . .  frolicking??

De tout façon (in any case) this day is generally celebrated with chocolat.

La vie est belle!
