Fisherman's Friend

Marinière (mahreenyare = striped shirt used by Brittany fisherman in the 1920's)

This is the new shirt the French soccer team will wear at their "away" games. It's a welcome change from the slightly flashy blue they wore until now. I like it. Even though it's made by Nike, it oozes a sport chic often visible only in Italian teams. Jean-Paul Gaultier, so famous for bringing this fisherman's attire to the forefront of fashion in the 80's, could have (re)designed it had he been asked . . . .

As for the reaction of the French, I think this phrase sums it up nicely :

"En tenue du mime Marceau...Espérons qu'ils ne feront pas semblant de jouer au foot..."  Frite

Translation : Dressed as Marceau the Mime,  let's hope that they won't pretend to play soccer . . "
